The CINC celebrates the Seminar «Current situation, Challenges and Perspectives for the future in the Nuclear Industry»

Maliaño, March 13, 2019.- The Cluster of the Nuclear Industry of Cantabria celebrates tomorrow the conference «Current Situation, Challenges and Perspectives for the Future in the Nuclear Industry».

The event, which will take place in the Chamber of Commerce of Santander and Cantabria from 10:00 am, will allow knowing the current situation and future opportunities within the Nuclear Industry sector.

The day, which will be opened by Sodercan, will be used to present the Activity Report of the business conglomerate during 2018.

The CINC will have three luxury speakers: Ivan Baldwin, president of the  Britain’s Energy Coast Business Cluster , who will speak about the importance of regional clustering and international cooperation; Jose Antonio Gago, general director of the Ascó Vandellós Nuclear Association that will deal with the technical and economic sustainability of the Spanish nuclear power plants: current situation and future prospects and Teresa Rodrigo, director of the Institute of Physics of Cantabria , who will discuss about the scientific infrastructure and its relationship with nuclear facilities.

The speakers

Iván Baldwin, chairman of the BECBC; an energy cluster of more than 300 companies based in North West England. He has more than 20 years of experience working in highly regulated sectors such as defense, construction and nuclear energy and building multiple relationships with commercial success in the UK and overseas markets.

For his part, Jose Antonio Gago, worked at ENRESA where he held various responsibilities related to the management of spent fuel and high-level waste, at ENDESA he was sub director of Engineering and Fuel Cycle of the General Directorate of Nuclear Energy and since 2009 he has worked in ANAV, the company that operates the Ascó 1 and 2 nuclear power plants and Vandellós II. Since May 2012 he is the general director of this Association. He is currently a member of the Board of irectors of the Foro Nuclear and has been the president of the Sociedad Nuclear Española during 2017 and 2018.

Teresa Rodrigo is professor of Physics at the University of Cantabria. She participates in experiments of Physics in Particles Accelerators, which are developed in large laboratories such as the CERN in Geneva or the FERMILAB in Chicago-US. She has participated in the most relevant experiments in the area of her ​​specialty that have taken place in the last decades, which is reflected in a long list of scientific publications.

Ensa participated in the International Nuclear Power Plants Summit in Istambul

Maliaño, March 11st 2019.- Equipos Nucleares S.A., S.M.E has been with the Cluster of the Nuclear Industry of Cantabria , in the 6th edition of the Congress and Exhibition of nuclear power plants – International Nuclear Power Plant Summit celebrated in Instambul.

The event, considerate as a reference date in the nuclear sector in Turkey, joined all supplier of the nuclear supply chain with the main buyers, decision makers and potential partners. There the state company located in Maliaño had the chance to show their products and services, show its capacities in the nuclear industry, update the latest industry developments and networking opportunities to explore new ways of collaboration.

The Advanced Technology Center of Ensa cooperate with Navantia improving the developments in the design and production of a component for a new submarine

Maliaño, March 5st, 2019. – The Advanced Technology Center of Equipos Nucleares S.A., S.M.E  , with other technologies centers as CTC, Eurocontrol and CADE, made an advisory and consulting work  to Navantia shipyard in the design and manufacturing review of one of the integrating components of the new S-80 submarines.

Through different analysis and calculations, in addition to ensuring compliance with the ASME standard, it was verified that these components of the submarine were safe for installation.

Ensa received students of the intermediate level of Mechanid of Salesianos school

Maliaño, February the 26fst of 2019.- Equipos Nucleares S.A., S.M.E  received the visit of the second-year students of the intermediate level of Machined of Salesianos school at Santander.

The group was welcomed with a presentation of the company where the main products designed and manufactured and the services offered to the nuclear industry were shown.

The visit continued in the Advanced Technology Centre where they observed, among others, tensile tests and impact tests with Charpy pendulum.

The meeting finished in the factory where they could see the main components and products in differents stages of manufacturing. Also the group observed the operation of specific machines such as grinding machines, boring machines, broaching machine and the vertical lathe and it was explained to them the work carried out in the clean area.

Ensa has done a new vibration test in the Ascó nuclear power plant

Maliaño, February the 21fst of 2019.- The Automatic department of the Advanced Technology Centre of Equipos Nucleares S.A., S.M.E has made a new test of vibrations in Ascó nuclear power plant in Tarragona to verify the correct state of the reactor coolant pumps.

As a part of the framework contract that the state company with head office/headquarters in Maliaño has signed with Westinghouse for the nuclear power plants of the National Association Ascó- Vandellós group it has been made the vibration measurements of the reactor coolant pumps during the beginning of plant cycle.

With these measures it was verified the correct state of the pumps after the servicing realized during the refuelling outage and also the needed calculations were made in anticipation of a scenery where balancing is necessary. The works were developed during the pressure and temperature rise of the plant until reaching nominal values.

Ensa participated in the Nordic Nuclear Forum 2019

Maliaño, February 19th 2019.- Equipos Nucleares S.A., S.M.E participated in the Nordic Nuclear Forum 2019 in Hensilki, Finlandia. Leandro Sánchez from the Field Services, Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste Area and Manuel Fajardo from the Marketing and Sales department, went to event on the part of the company.

During the meeting, several presentations were given by different companies and government representatives of European countries linked with the nuclear sector.

The state company located in Maliaño, had the opportunity to show their products and capacities in this scenery focusing on the exchange of information about actual topics of life cicle of nuclear energy.

Ensa keeps its CEFRI certification to intervene in French nuclear power plants

Maliaño, February 11st 2019.- Equipos Nucleares S.A., S.M.E successfully passes the annual follow-up audit of the CEFRI certification .

The CEFRI certification recognizes the ability of a company to implement and maintain a management system that guarantees the protection of workers who perform activities under ionizing radiation; an essential requirement to be able to intervene in French nuclear power plants. Ensa has this certification since 2012.

ENSA moved its headquarters from Madrid to Cantabria

The decision has been made by the Government delegate of Cantabria with the SEPI president and the head of the company

Maliaño, 22nd of January of 2019.- Equipos Nucleares S.A., S.M.E , belonging to the SEPI group, has decided to move its headquarters, which up to now was in Madrid, to the Cantabrian city of Maliaño. In this way, the company brings together its centers of activity, management and production, in the Cantabrian region. Its manufacturing center is in the same municipality, in the South of the Santander Bay. The initiative has started by the Government delegate in Cantabria, Pablo Zuloaga, after a recent meeting with the president of SEPI, Vicente Fernández, and the new president of Ensa, José David Gomila.


With this move, Ensa suited its headquarters to the reality of the company, since the main activity, manufacturing plants, and almost all of the staff are concentrated in Maliaño. From these facilities, all commercial activities are undertaken and they received visits from customers, being also the point of residence of the management team of the company.


In addition to match its registered with the main center of interests of the company, the transfer of its headquarters is impact, from the fiscal point of view, that the Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales y el de Actos Jurídicos Documentados will enter in Cantabria. Other economic implications is that the transfer of 50% of the VAT collected by the State to the region.

The company was formed on July 10, 1973 in order to satisfy the needs of the Spanish civil nuclear program in the manufacturing of nuclear components. The construction of the plant of Maliaño took place between 1975 and 1976, when started the manufacture of the first components for the Spanish market.

In the past 45 years, the Cantabrian company has earned international recognition as multisystem nuclear components supplier, the quality of their products and the high technology of their production processes and their services.

At present, Ensa has among its clients all power plants and industrial plants of chemical and steel industry of the country. All components for the spent fuel of Spanish plants have been manufactured by it. In addition, the equipment manufactured by this company operating in more than 90 nuclear power plants in Europe, America, Asia and Africa, in countries such as Germany, Sweden, Finland, France, Italy, United Kingdom, United States, South Africa, Argentina, India, Slovenia, Switzerland, Belgium, China and South Korea.

Ensa has reached high levels of training what makes it the first metallurgical company of our country in accreditations for the laboratories of its Advanced Technology Center that certify the quality of their products. This also allows the company participate in large international projects, such as the of the Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor International , in France, where Ensa has a key role.

Equipos Nucleares is a public company owned by 78,75% by the Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales and a 21.25% by the Dirección General de Patrimonio del Estado, whose activity is the manufacture and supply of nuclear components.

Ensa supplied Almaraz NPP with a long pendular tool

Maliaño, January 21st, 2019.- Equipos Nucleares SA, SME delivered the long pendular spent fuel handling tool , successfully completing the assembly at the Almaraz NPP in Cáceres and the Site Acceptance Test consisting of handling with a dummy element in the spent fuel pool of Unit I of said plant.

This tool has been designed for handling fuel elements located in the spent fuel pool, in areas inaccessible to other tools existing to date in the plant. This special lifting device is part of the family of pendular tools in which Ensa is specialized. Its design is patented since 2014 and has been supplied to plants such as José Cabrera NPP , Almaraz NPP I and II, Ascó NPP I and II and Yonggwang NPP III and IV.

The pendular tool incorporates technological advances that optimize the balancing of the tool during the grip of the fuel element, providing a fast and reliable response.

Ensa collaborates with the University of Cantabria and the CSIC in a project on non-destructive ultrasonic testing techniques

Maliaño, December 17th, 2018 – Equipos Nucleares S.A., S.M.E collaborated with the University of Cantabria and the Higher Council for Scientific Research in a project related to the techniques of non-destructive testing by ultrasound whose objective was that the Cantabrian company improve its training in two new generation techniques Phased Array and TOFD.

The execution of this project is translated in terms of innovation for Ensa, due to the fact that the advanced ultrasound tests can contribute to guarantee the quality of the welds in the welding station itself.

This collaboration has served to launch a new inspection technology project aimed at robotizing tests for the ITER project with which the Cantabrian company and the UC will continue working together.

The project was financed by the Ministry of Innovation, Industry, Tourism and Trade of the Government of Cantabria through the European Regional Development Fund .
